Can one educational assessment provide an autism diagnosis?
Not through the educational psychology service offered by The Think Works. An educational psychologist can assess learning, development and educational participation and may contribute evidence to an autism pathway. Current clinical guidance describes diagnosis for children and young people as a multidisciplinary process that includes developmental, medical and observational information.
Four facts to know
Educational psychologists can contribute specialist information about development and learning.
Speech and language therapists can contribute assessment of communication.
A learning or communication profile is useful whether or not diagnosis is reached.
A private report does not guarantee entry to, or an outcome from, another service’s diagnostic pathway.
What an educational psychologist can help answer
Questions may include how the child approaches learning, which environments support participation, how demands affect regulation and what adjustments may help at school.
What a speech and language therapist can help answer
Questions may include how the child understands and expresses language, communicates socially, manages conversational demands and uses communication across settings.
What a wider diagnostic assessment considers
NICE guidance includes developmental and medical history, direct observation, social and communication information, consideration of alternative explanations and co-occurring conditions, and a profile of strengths and needs. The precise Isle of Man pathway should be checked with the relevant local service.
Support should remain needs-led
Families and schools do not need to postpone reasonable communication and learning support while diagnostic questions remain unresolved.
